Nearly every smart thermostat sold today works with Alexa. The real question is how well: whether you can set temperature by voice, trigger routines, use the thermostat as a presence sensor, or control it locally without a cloud round-trip. That varies significantly by model.
What “works with Alexa” actually means
The “Works with Alexa” badge means the thermostat connects to the Alexa ecosystem via a skill or native integration. At minimum, you can say “Alexa, set the temperature to 70” and it works.
Beyond basic voice control, integration depth splits into three levels:
Level 1: Voice control: Set temperature, change mode (heat/cool/off), ask current temperature. Every Alexa-compatible thermostat does this.
Level 2: Routines: Trigger an Alexa routine when temperature crosses a threshold, or have a routine adjust the thermostat. Useful for “Good Night” routines that set a sleep temperature, or Away automations.
Level 3: Local control: The thermostat communicates with Alexa devices on the local network without going through the cloud. Faster, works during internet outages. Currently limited to Matter-compatible devices.
The best thermostats for Alexa
Amazon Smart Thermostat
The tightest Alexa integration available: the Amazon Smart Thermostat has an Alexa chip built in, which means setup takes minutes, there’s no separate skill to enable, and it responds to voice through any nearby Echo device without latency.

- Requires a C-wire (or the Amazon C-wire power kit, sold separately)
- No room sensors; no heat pump advanced controls
- Best for: straightforward forced-air systems where Alexa integration is the top priority
ecobee SmartThermostat Premium
ecobee has the deepest Alexa integration of any third-party thermostat. The SmartThermostat Premium has Alexa built in: it’s both a thermostat and an Alexa device. You can talk to it directly, and it exposes temperature triggers to Alexa routines.
- Full routine support including temperature triggers
- Room sensors count as presence sensors in Alexa routines
- Always requires a C-wire (or Power Extender Kit)
- Best for: households that already use Alexa heavily and want room-level presence sensing
Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)
The Nest works with Alexa through a cloud skill. Voice control is fully functional — temperature, mode, holds; but Nest doesn’t expose as many routine triggers to Alexa as ecobee does. The integration is solid but less deep.
One important note: Nest and Alexa integration is cloud-dependent. If Google’s servers are down, Alexa can’t reach the Nest. Local control isn’t available.

Honeywell Home T9

Alexa routines with thermostats
The most useful automation is a Good Morning or Good Night routine that adjusts the thermostat at a consistent time, without relying on a schedule inside the thermostat itself. All four thermostats above support this.
More advanced: arrival/departure routines that use Echo device presence detection to adjust temperature when you leave or arrive home. ecobee’s room sensors work well here because they expose occupancy to Alexa natively.
For the specific Alexa Routines setup, you don’t need to do anything in the thermostat’s app. Configure it entirely in the Alexa app under Routines.
What Alexa cannot do
- Set a weekly schedule: Alexa can adjust temperature in the moment or on a routine trigger, but it can’t program the thermostat’s 7-day schedule. Do that in the thermostat’s own app.
- Access advanced heat pump settings: AUX lockout temperatures, balance points, and staging settings are not exposed to Alexa. Manage those in the thermostat app directly. See Best Thermostat for a Heat Pump.
