Apple HomeKit lets you control smart thermostats through the Apple Home app, Siri voice commands, and automations that respond to your iPhone’s presence. The catch: not all smart thermostats support it, and the biggest name (Nest) that doesn’t support HomeKit at all.
Which thermostats support HomeKit
ecobee SmartThermostat Premium (best overall)
ecobee has the deepest HomeKit integration of any thermostat available in North America. It connects natively to Apple Home without a hub, supports Thread for local control, and exposes the thermostat and room sensors as separate HomeKit accessories.
What you can do in Apple Home:
- Set temperature and mode
- Use room sensor occupancy to trigger automations
- Create scenes that include thermostat state
- View temperature history in the Home app
- Automate based on your iPhone’s location (geofencing)
- Full Siri voice control: “Hey Siri, set the temperature to 68”

Honeywell Home T9
The Honeywell T9 supports HomeKit through the Honeywell Home cloud — it’s a bridge-based integration rather than native Thread. It works reliably, but control requires an internet connection (the T9 communicates through Honeywell’s servers first, then to Apple Home).
Room sensors are supported as temperature sensors in HomeKit, but occupancy data from room sensors isn’t exposed as a trigger in automations. Only the main thermostat’s presence detection works there.
Tado Smart Thermostat
Tado’s line has long supported HomeKit via its Internet Bridge hub. The Tado system is popular in Europe and available in the US. HomeKit integration is solid; setup requires the bridge device. Tado uses a modular system with a separate Wiring Centre for multi-zone homes.
What doesn’t support HomeKit
Google Nest: No HomeKit support. Google has not added HomeKit to any Nest thermostat. If your home is primarily Apple, Nest is not your thermostat.
Amazon Smart Thermostat: Alexa-native; no HomeKit support.
Most budget Wi-Fi thermostats: HomeKit certification requires hardware-level security chips. Budget thermostats almost never have them.
HomeKit automations with thermostats
The most useful HomeKit thermostat automation is presence-based: when the last person leaves home, set to a setback temperature; when someone arrives, restore comfort temperature. This works through iPhone location sharing in HomeKit.
To set this up in Apple Home: Automations → Add Automation → A Person Arrives (or Leaves) → select the thermostat → set temperature.
For time-based schedules, the thermostat’s own app schedule is more reliable than HomeKit automations. HomeKit time automations require a home hub (HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K) to run when your iPhone isn’t home.
The Matter upgrade path
Matter is an open smart home standard that allows local control between devices without cloud dependency. HomeKit supports Matter natively. A Matter thermostat connects to Apple Home directly through a Thread border router (built into HomePod mini, HomePod 2nd gen, and Apple TV 4K 3rd gen).
ecobee’s SmartThermostat Premium supports Matter over Thread. This means local control in Apple Home: faster response, no cloud round-trip, works during internet outages.
If you’re setting up HomeKit from scratch today, a Thread-capable thermostat is the better long-term choice.
