If you run an air-source heat pump with a gas furnace backup, one setting decides your January bill: the outdoor temperature where the thermostat stops the heat pump and lights the furnace. Set it too high and you burn gas on nights the heat pump could have handled for half the cost. Set it too low and the heat pump grinds at a COP below 2, paying more for electric heat than gas would have cost.
Most “works with heat pumps” thermostats hide this control or fake it. We tested the three people actually cross-shop in 2026 against that single handoff.
The short version: all three support dual fuel. Only one lets you base the switchover on a real outdoor sensor instead of internet weather. In IECC zone 5, that gap is worth real money on cold-front nights.
The metric everyone checks vs. the one that matters
Walk into this purchase and the surface question is “does the app work and does it support heat pumps?” Every box on the shelf says yes. ecobee, Honeywell Home, and Nest all run polished apps and all claim heat pump compatibility.
That tells you nothing about gas waste.
The load-bearing variable is the switchover (balance) point: the outdoor temperature below which the controller drops the compressor and runs the furnace. Two sub-questions decide whether it’s done right:
- Can you set the switchover temperature yourself, by degree?
- Does the thermostat read outdoor temperature from a local sensor, or from an internet weather station that can be 3–6°F off your actual roofline during a front?
A thermostat that switches on a crude indoor-temperature rule, or off a weather feed for a station 8 miles away, will hand off at the wrong moment. In zone 5, the wrong moment happens dozens of nights a winter.

The blind-spot delta: where the gas gets wasted
Here is the part the spec sheets bury.
ecobee Premium does dual fuel correctly on paper. You set Compressor Min Outdoor Temperature (default 35°F), and below it the heat pump is locked out and the furnace carries the load. During setup you must disable “allow the heat pump and aux heat to run simultaneously,” or you risk the furnace and compressor fighting each other.
The catch: ecobee has no wired outdoor sensor. It pulls outdoor temperature from an internet weather station matched to your registered address. On a calm day that’s fine. During a cold front, the nearest reporting station can read several degrees warmer than the air at your house, so ecobee keeps the heat pump running past the point where it’s still efficient.
Honeywell T10+ Pro is the only one of the three that closes that gap. Its balance-point lockout (ISU 3120) can run off internet weather, a wired outdoor sensor (C7089U1006), or a wireless outdoor sensor (C7089R3013, T10+ only). Mount the sensor on a shaded north wall and the switchover triggers on the temperature at your house, not a regional average.
The T10 also lets you tune how hard it leans on the furnace. For dual fuel, the Backup Heat Differential can’t be set to “Comfort”; it defaults to 2°F and adjusts from 2°F to 15°F. A wider differential makes the furnace wait longer, which protects gas. That’s a direct lever on the waste.
Nest Learning 4th gen is where dual-fuel owners get surprised. Nest’s marquee efficiency feature, Heat Pump Balance, is explicitly not available on dual-fuel systems. You fall back to setting a fixed lockout temperature by hand in the Equipment menu, and Nest decides the switchover from Wi-Fi online weather near your home. No local sensor option. So you lose both the smart-learning logic and the precise temperature read at once.
Put a number on it: if your switchover sits at 32°F but the true air at your house hits 32°F two to four hours before the regional station reports it, an internet-only thermostat runs the compressor those hours at a COP that’s already dropping toward 1.8–2.0. In zone 5, with maybe 40–60 such handoff nights a winter, that’s a measurable slice of your heating bill spent running the heat pump when the furnace was the cheaper call, or vice versa if your gas is expensive.
Compliance and install traps
Dual fuel has wiring rules that don’t apply to a plain furnace swap. Three to flag:
Never land a wire on W for a heat pump call. Honeywell’s own data sheet warns it can make heat run continuously. Dual-fuel furnace backup is wired through the appropriate backup-heat terminal, not the standard W heat call.
Heat pump and furnace must not run together. All three thermostats enforce this in dual-fuel mode. If you instead let an external fossil-fuel kit handle lockout, the thermostat may energize both at once and rely on the kit to separate them. Pick one scheme; don’t half-wire both.
A real switchover needs a real temperature. If you want the T10’s wired or wireless outdoor sensor advantage, you have to buy and mount the sensor (C7089U1006 wired, or C7089R3013 wireless on the T10+). It’s not in the base box. Without it, the T10 falls back to internet weather and you’ve paid for a capability you aren’t using.
One more, for the prosumers: the switchover temperature isn’t a set-and-forget number. The right balance point depends on your heat pump’s rated low-temperature COP and your local gas-vs-electric price ratio. Start near 30–35°F, watch a few cold nights, and move it.
The verdict
Winner: Honeywell Home T10+ Pro. It’s the only thermostat here that can base the heat-pump-to-furnace handoff on the actual temperature at your house, via the wireless C7089R3013 (or wired C7089U1006) outdoor sensor, plus a tunable 2–15°F backup differential to throttle gas use. In IECC zone 5, where cold fronts outrun regional weather feeds, that local read is the whole ballgame. It’s also the cheapest of the three before you add the sensor.
Strong value pick: ecobee Premium. Native dual fuel, a clean by-the-degree Compressor Min Outdoor Temperature setting, and the best app of the bunch. Buy it if your weather station happens to sit close and your terrain is flat. You give up the local-sensor precision, but for many homes that’s a small loss for the lower price and nicer software.
Skip it for dual fuel: Nest Learning 4th gen. Lovely thermostat, wrong tool here. Its headline Heat Pump Balance feature is disabled on dual-fuel systems, leaving you a manual lockout temperature driven by internet weather. You pay the most ($279.99) and lose the feature you’re paying for. Fine for a single-stage heat pump or a plain furnace; not for this topology.
When the verdict flips: if you can’t or won’t mount an outdoor sensor, the T10’s main edge evaporates, all three are then reading internet weather, and the ecobee Premium wins on price and app. And if your gas is cheap and your winters are brutal (a high balance point near 38–40°F, furnace doing most of the work), the precise switchover matters less and any of the three set to a fixed lockout will do.

A wired or wireless outdoor sensor measures your actual conditions, so the switchover fires at the right moment. Among these three, only the Honeywell T10/T10+ Pro supports a real outdoor sensor.
Can the heat pump and furnace run at the same time in dual-fuel mode? No, and they shouldn’t. ecobee, Honeywell, and Nest all lock out simultaneous operation in dual-fuel mode. Running both wastes energy and can damage the compressor. The exception is if you wire an external fossil-fuel kit to handle lockout, in which case the thermostat may energize both and the kit separates them. Pick one approach.
