Why there’s nothing to open

Per Lennox’s own spec sheet, the Smart Hub pulls 24VAC at 1 amp from your HVAC system and feeds the HD Display 12VDC through the subbase connection. That’s the entire power path, with no slot for AA cells anywhere in it.
The M30 is simpler still: it’s a single wall-mounted unit, no separate hub, no subbase. Lennox’s install manual calls it out directly as “a 24VAC low-voltage thermostat” that “requires a common wire to the thermostat to operate.” Its manual doesn’t mention batteries even once, in 52 pages.
Bottom line: on all three models, if the thermostat has no power, it’s a wiring or breaker problem, not a battery problem.

What the “low battery” message in the manual actually means
If you’ve dug into the S30 or E30’s installation manual and found a reference to a “low battery condition,” that’s real, but it’s not describing a consumer part. Both manuals’ troubleshooting checklists say the same thing almost word for word:
“The HD Display may take up to three minutes before anything appears on the screen due to a HD Display low battery condition. HD Display battery charging only occurs when connected to the subbase.”
That’s describing a small, sealed battery built into the display’s circuit board, the same kind of buffer battery you’d find in a laptop’s CMOS clock, not something you’re meant to buy at a hardware store. Its only job is to bridge the brief gap right after you first connect power, before the display has drawn enough charge through the subbase to boot. Both manuals are explicit that it only charges while docked to the subbase, and both say that if you pull the HD Display off the wall, it shuts down immediately rather than running on battery. It isn’t designed for portable or battery-only operation. There’s no model number, no replacement part, and no compartment, because Lennox never intended for anyone to touch it.
If your screen takes a few minutes to light up the first time you power on a new S30 or E30 install, that’s this behavior, not a defect. Give it the full three minutes before assuming something’s wrong.

- Check the breaker. Flip the breaker for your furnace or air handler off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. This resets a tripped breaker or a system that’s stuck mid-cycle.
- On the S30/E30, check the HD Display is fully seated on the subbase. A display that’s not clicked in flush and level won’t get its 12VDC feed and won’t communicate with the Smart Hub, and the screen goes blank exactly like a dead-battery symptom would on a normal thermostat.
- Check the communication LED on the Smart Hub. Lennox’s own checklist uses this as the first diagnostic: a lit green LED on the Smart Hub means 24VAC is present and it’s talking to the display. No LED means the hub itself isn’t getting power; check the wiring at the equipment end.

Why this is a 24VAC circuit, not a battery-powered one
The Smart Hub’s 24VAC feed is a NEC Article 725 Class 2 power-limited circuit, the same classification covering every thermostat control wire regardless of brand. That’s the underlying reason Lennox designed the S30, E30, and M30 around continuous wired power rather than batteries in the first place: a communicating thermostat with a touchscreen display and Wi-Fi radio draws more continuous current than a simple battery pack could sustain for years without replacement, which is also why most Wi-Fi thermostats across brands either require a C-wire outright or fall back to reduced functionality without one.
