How to Unlock a Sensi Thermostat

Sensi’s keypad lockout is app-only. There’s no PIN to enter and no button combination to hold down on the thermostat itself. If your Sensi is locked and you’re not seeing an unlock option on the unit, that’s expected. Open the Sensi app instead.

How to unlock a Sensi thermostat (the real steps)

  1. Open the Sensi app and select your thermostat from the dashboard.
  2. Tap the thermostat name.
  3. Tap the settings gear icon.
  4. Tap System settings.
  5. Toggle Keypad Lockout off.

That’s the entire process. When it’s off, the lock icon disappears from both the app and the thermostat display, and all the physical buttons work again.

What the lock icon actually means

When keypad lockout is on, every physical button on the thermostat is disabled except the backlight button. Pressing anything else on the unit itself won’t do anything, by design, not because something’s broken. You’ll see a small lock icon on both the thermostat’s screen and in the app when it’s active.

This is different from a Wi-Fi setup code. The “Security Code” printed on the black card or product sticker that came with your Sensi is for connecting the thermostat to your Wi-Fi network during setup. It has nothing to do with keypad lockout and won’t unlock a locked keypad.

If you don’t have app access

If someone else set up the Sensi account (a property manager, a previous homeowner, an HVAC installer) and you don’t have login access, you can’t unlock the keypad from the thermostat itself. The lockout is controlled entirely from the account side. Your options:

  • Ask whoever set it up to either disable the lockout from their app, or transfer/share access to the Sensi account with you.
  • Check for a Custom Keypad Lockout setup. Property managers and landlords sometimes use a separate feature, accessed only through the web-based Sensi Manager Dashboard, that selectively restricts specific controls (temperature, mode, fan, schedule) rather than locking everything. If you’re a tenant, this is the more likely setup, and the same rule applies: only the dashboard account holder can change it.
  • If you own the thermostat and truly lost account access, Sensi’s own support can help recover account access. That’s a faster path than trying to reset the thermostat’s hardware, since a factory reset doesn’t bypass an account-side lockout the same way it does on some other brands.

FAQ

Does my Sensi thermostat have a PIN to unlock it? No. Sensi’s keypad lockout doesn’t use a PIN at all; it’s toggled entirely through the Sensi app’s System settings menu. If you’ve seen instructions elsewhere describing a PIN or a button-hold sequence to unlock a Sensi, that’s describing a different thermostat brand’s lock system, not Sensi’s.

Can I unlock a Sensi thermostat without the app? Not through button presses on the unit itself. The lockout is account-controlled. If you don’t have the app, you need access to whichever Sensi account originally enabled the lock.

What’s the difference between full lockout and Custom Keypad Lockout? Full lockout (the standard, app-toggled version) disables every physical button except backlight. Custom Keypad Lockout is a separate, dashboard-only feature that lets an account holder allow or block specific controls individually (common in rental properties) and isn’t available through the mobile app at all.

Why does my thermostat show a lock icon but the app doesn’t show it as locked? Give the app a minute to sync after a change. Wi-Fi thermostats can lag briefly between the physical unit’s state and what the app displays. If the mismatch persists, close and reopen the app.
