How to Program a Honeywell Thermostat: Schedules by Model Type

Table of Contents

To program a Honeywell thermostat, you’re setting a repeating schedule, not just adjusting today’s temperature. On basic and Pro Series models, that’s Menu → Schedule, then a time and temperature for four daily periods: Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep. On T-series Wi-Fi models, it’s the same idea on a touchscreen, done on the thermostat itself rather than in the app. The exact button path below depends on which type you have.

Which kind of Honeywell thermostat do you have?

  • Basic digital or Pro Series (no Wi-Fi, physical buttons): programming happens entirely on the unit.
  • T5 / T6 Pro / T9 / T10 Pro (Wi-Fi, touchscreen): programming still happens on the unit’s touchscreen. The Honeywell Home / Resideo app handles remote temperature control and notifications, not the schedule itself.

Not sure which you have? See our Honeywell thermostat manuals hub to identify your model by series first.

Understand Hold, Schedule, and Temporary Hold before you start

Programming sets the recurring pattern. Two other things can override it without changing it:

If your schedule seems to not be “sticking,” it’s usually one of these three, not a programming mistake. See how to turn off or adjust your schedule if you need to override or clear it rather than reprogram it from scratch.

Programming a basic or Pro Series Honeywell (button model)

  1. Press Menu, then select Schedule.
  2. Choose your schedule type if the model asks: 5-2 day (one program for weekdays, one for the weekend), 5-1-1 day (weekdays, Saturday, and Sunday each separate), or 7-day (every day set individually).
  3. Select the day or day-group you’re programming.
  4. For each of the four periods, Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep, set the time and the target temperature.
  5. Confirm or save, then repeat for the remaining days or day-groups.
  6. Exit the menu. The new schedule takes effect at the next period change.

Programming a T-series Wi-Fi thermostat (touchscreen)

  1. On the home screen, tap Menu, then Schedule.
  2. Some models offer a guided wizard alongside manual entry; either walks you through the same underlying Wake/Leave/Return/Sleep structure.
  3. Select the days you’re setting, then set the time and temperature for each period.
  4. Save, then repeat for other days if you’re not using a single 7-day pattern.
  5. The app mirrors your schedule for viewing and lets you adjust today’s temperature remotely, but the schedule itself lives on the thermostat.

If your schedule doesn’t seem to be working

  • Check for an active Hold first. A Hold overrides every scheduled change until you cancel it; the schedule underneath is often fine.
  • Check for Temporary Hold. It looks similar but clears itself at the next period change; if temperatures are correcting on their own a few hours later, this was it.
  • Confirm you picked the right day-group. On a 5-2 or 5-1-1 model, a change made to “weekday” doesn’t touch Saturday or Sunday; that’s the design, not a bug.
  • Battery or power interruption can reset the schedule. If the batteries died completely or power was cut for an extended period, see our battery guide for how long you have to swap batteries before losing programming.

FAQ

What does 5-2, 5-1-1, and 7-day mean? They describe how many separate programs you can set across the week. 5-2 splits weekday vs. weekend, 5-1-1 gives Saturday and Sunday their own programs on top of the weekday one, and 7-day lets every single day be different.

Can I program my Honeywell thermostat from the app? For T5/T6 Pro/T9/T10 Pro models, no, not the schedule itself. The app handles remote temperature adjustments and alerts; the schedule is set on the thermostat’s own touchscreen.

Why did my schedule disappear after a power outage? Most Honeywell thermostats hold programming in memory for only a short window without power. See our battery guide for how long, by model.

I set a schedule but the temperature isn’t changing when it should. Check for an active Hold or Temporary Hold first; both override the schedule without erasing it. See the Hold and Temporary Hold links above.
