Braeburn’s core terminal set is consistent across most of the line: Rc/Rh, C, W1, Y1, G, O/B. Higher-stage and Wi-Fi models add terminals on top of that base set rather than replacing it. Safety box: shut off power to your HVAC system at the breaker before touching any thermostat wiring. Low-voltage 24V AC control wiring won’t shock you the way line voltage will, but a short at the terminals can blow a fuse on your equipment’s control board. If your project touches line-voltage wiring or gas/refrigerant lines at all, that’s a licensed HVAC tech’s job, not a DIY one.

This circuit is a NEC Article 725 Class 2 power-limited circuit, the same classification as every other 24VAC thermostat wire, the reason it doesn’t need conduit, and why Class 2 wiring must stay physically separated from line-voltage wiring in the same raceway.

BlueLink Wi-Fi models (7205, 8205)

The BlueLink line supports up to 3 heat stages / 2 cool stages and carries the same core terminals plus A, L, K accessory terminals for features like humidifier/dehumidifier control on some models in the broader Braeburn line. Confirm the exact function against your specific installer manual before wiring anything to those three, since it varies by model.

The C-wire matters more here than on a basic model. Wi-Fi will run without a C-wire on a standard single-stage conventional system, but heat pump systems and heat-only or cool-only conventional systems need the C-wire connected for Wi-Fi to work at all, even though the thermostat itself will still control the equipment on battery power alone. If you don’t have a C-wire run, see thermostat wiring without a C-wire for the general options (a 5th wire pull, a G-wire repurpose, or an add-a-wire adapter).

Reading your existing wiring before you disconnect anything

Before pulling wires off your old thermostat:

  1. Photograph the existing terminal block, noting which wire color sits in which labeled terminal, before disconnecting anything. Braeburn’s own labels above match the near-universal HVAC convention (R for power, C for common, W for heat, Y for cool, G for fan, O/B for reversing valve), but wire colors aren’t standardized between manufacturers, so don’t trust color alone.
  2. Label each wire with tape as you remove it if the terminal block markings are worn or hard to read.
  3. Match wire-to-terminal on the new thermostat, not wire-color-to-terminal. An old system wired by a different installer may not follow the usual color convention.

FAQ

Does my Braeburn thermostat need a C-wire? Basic models run fine on batteries without one for standard heating/cooling control. Wi-Fi BlueLink models need a C-wire specifically for the Wi-Fi radio to work on heat pump systems and on heat-only/cool-only conventional systems; conventional single-stage systems can run Wi-Fi without one.

What does O/B do on a Braeburn thermostat? It controls your heat pump’s reversing valve, the component that switches the system between heating and cooling mode. Whether your equipment uses O (energized in cooling) or B (energized in heating) depends on your specific heat pump manufacturer, not on the thermostat.

My Braeburn thermostat isn’t calling for heat/cool even though it’s wired. Confirm Rc/Rh actually has 24V AC on it with a multimeter before assuming a thermostat fault. A tripped breaker or blown transformer fuse upstream will look identical to a wiring mistake at the thermostat.

What’s the difference between W1 and W2? W1 is your first (primary) heat stage; W2 is a second stage, present on multi-stage furnaces or as backup/auxiliary heat on some heat pump setups. A single-stage system only uses W1.
