The ST55 is the cheapest thermostat on this list, and it genuinely doesn’t need a C-wire for a standard gas or electric furnace with central AC — it runs on AA batteries instead. Read this carefully if you have a heat pump: Sensi’s own documentation states the ST55 requires a C-wire for heat-only, cool-only, and heat-pump system configurations. The no-C-wire claim on this model is real, but it’s conditional on your system type in a way ecobee and Nest’s claims aren’t.

Do you actually not have a C-wire?
Before assuming you need a workaround, check your existing thermostat’s terminal block for a wire labeled C (sometimes blue) connected and not just present-but-unused.
