Why “Aprilaire thermostat” isn’t one product
Aprilaire sells thermostats, whole-house humidifiers, humidistats, and air-cleaner controls, and several of those product lines use model numbers in overlapping ranges. A search for “Aprilaire thermostat manual” can just as easily turn up a humidifier control manual if you search by number alone. Before you download anything, confirm two things on the unit itself:
- The full model number, printed on the faceplate or in the Settings/About menu (not just “Aprilaire” — the model number is what determines the manual and the reset procedure).
- What it actually controls. A thermostat has R, C, W, Y, and G terminals for heating/cooling equipment. A humidistat (Model 60/62) wires to a humidifier only and has no heating/cooling terminals at all.

“Legacy” here means distributors and HVAC parts retailers list the model as no longer in new production, not that the manual has been pulled. Aprilaire keeps owner’s manuals live for models that are still installed in millions of homes, whether or not the unit is still sold new. If a manual link above 404s (Aprilaire reorganizes its docs folder periodically), search the exact model number in the Owner’s Manuals center instead of guessing at a URL.
8900 series: Wi-Fi and IAQ control
The 8900 series is Aprilaire’s current top-tier line. The 8920W is a full-color touchscreen thermostat that also runs indoor air quality equipment (humidifier, dehumidifier, air cleaner) from the same screen, on a 3-wire connection between the display and an equipment control module. It needs a C-wire. The related 8910W covers the same IAQ-control feature set. 8600 series: 8620, 8620W, 8600
The 8600 series covers the 8620 (and Wi-Fi 8620W) and the older 8600 touchscreen model. These are mid-range programmable thermostats: 2-stage or 4-stage heat pump compatible, with a recessed reset button under the front cover on the 8620/8620W. The 8600 runs on an internal battery with an optional C-wire and no home/away feature.
8400 series: the largest family, mostly non-programmable
The 8400 series is where most of the search volume for specific model numbers lands, and it’s also the most fragmented: programmable and non-programmable versions, single-stage and multi-stage versions, and a Wi-Fi variant (8476W), all sharing one owner’s manual template with per-model spec pages.
- 8466: universal, programmable, up to 4H/2C heat pump. Still a current listing.
- 8476 / 8476W: non-programmable / Wi-Fi, reset button under the battery door.
- 8463: programmable 1H/1C, discontinued with no manufacturer-listed replacement.
- 8448: non-programmable, up to 4H/2C heat pump.
- 8446: non-programmable, 2H/1C heat pump.
- 8444: non-programmable, 1H/1C, the simplest unit in the series.
All of them display room temperature, setpoint, and (with the optional 8052 outdoor sensor) outdoor temperature on a 4.5-square-inch backlit LCD, and all include filter, water panel, and HVAC service reminders. 8500 series: 8570
The 8570 is a premium programmable thermostat built for 1- or 2-stage gas, electric, or heat pump systems, and it’s the one model in this list built to pair with Aprilaire’s Model 6504 zoning system, controlling up to four zones from a single thermostat. It’s ENERGY STAR rated. Some parts retailers cross-reference the 8620W as its closest current equivalent for like-for-like replacement.
8300s series: 8363 and its siblings
The 8363 is an older electronic 5/2-day programmable thermostat. Aprilaire documents it together with the 8344, 8346, 8348, 8365, and 8366 in a single shared manual rather than a per-model PDF. If you have any of these, the same document covers your unit. S-Series: the current professional line
Aprilaire’s newest thermostats are the S86 (S86NMU, S86NMUPR, S86WMUPR) and S84 (S84NSU, S84N1H1C) series, sold through shop.aprilaire.com and HVAC distributors. These aren’t in the keyword list above because search volume for them is still low, but if you’re being quoted a replacement for a discontinued 8400- or 8600-series unit, an S86 or S84 model is the likely cross-reference your contractor means.
Not a thermostat: Model 60, 62, and 600
If your unit is labeled Model 60 or 62, it’s a humidistat: the digital control that runs a whole-house humidifier, wired separately from your heating/cooling thermostat. Model 600 is a whole-house bypass humidifier itself, not a control at all. Neither has heating/cooling terminals, and neither uses the reset or programming procedures on this page. FAQ
Where do I find my Aprilaire thermostat’s model number? Check the faceplate of the unit (printed directly on the plastic housing) or, on touchscreen models, the Settings or About menu. It’s a 4-digit number, sometimes with a letter suffix (W for Wi-Fi, M for a manual revision).
Is my Aprilaire thermostat model still supported if it’s discontinued? Yes. Aprilaire keeps the owner’s manual published for legacy models even after they’re out of new production, since the units stay installed for years. A discontinued model number just means a contractor replacing the unit will likely quote you a current S86 or S84 series thermostat instead of an exact match.
What’s the difference between the 8400 and 8600 series? The 8400 series is Aprilaire’s simpler, mostly non-programmable line (8444, 8446, 8448, 8463, 8476). The 8600 series (8600, 8620, 8620W) adds touchscreen displays and, on the 8620W, Wi-Fi.
My unit is labeled “Aprilaire 60” or “Aprilaire 600.” Why isn’t it in this thermostat list? Because it isn’t a thermostat. Model 60/62 is a humidistat for a whole-house humidifier, and Model 600 is the humidifier itself. See the note above.
