American Standard and Trane are the same thing. Trane Technologies manufactures both brands at the same facilities with the same components. American Standard is the contractor-channel brand; Trane is sold through Trane-authorized dealers. If you have an American Standard system, you have a Trane system under a different nameplate.

What American Standard makes

American Standard mirrors Trane’s product line exactly:

AccuComfort series — American Standard’s premium tier. Variable-capacity gas furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps; communicating AccuLink thermostat required for full variable-capacity control. The 97% AFUE AccuComfort modulating furnace is equivalent to Trane’s S9V2 or XV80.

Gold series — American Standard’s mid-tier. Two-stage heat and cool; standard 24V wiring; compatible with any thermostat. Equivalent to Trane XR series. The Gold 96V gas furnace (96% AFUE, variable-speed blower) is the Gold tier workhorse.

Silver series — American Standard’s entry-level. Single-stage, 80% AFUE furnaces and single-stage ACs. Equivalent to Trane XB series.

Furnaces: 97% AFUE AccuComfort (modulating), Gold 96V (96% AFUE, variable-speed), Silver 95V (95% AFUE), Silver 80 (80% AFUE).

Is American Standard a good brand?

American Standard is Trane. The same premium build quality, the same heat exchanger longevity, the same warranty terms, the same parts. Whether “American Standard” or “Trane” is on the unit has no bearing on the equipment inside.

What actually differentiates American Standard from Trane: the dealer relationship. An American Standard dealer has a contractor agreement with American Standard; a Trane dealer has one with Trane. In some markets, the same contractor can be both. In others, they’re separate dealer networks.

For homeowners: ask your contractor whether they quote both. In some cases American Standard pricing comes in lower than Trane at the same tier. In other cases it’s identical. The equipment is the same.

Parts availability: American Standard and Trane share part numbers for major components. Any Trane dealer can service American Standard equipment and source parts through the same supply chain.

How to find your American Standard’s age

The rating plate is on the inside of the furnace front panel or the side of the outdoor unit cabinet. Many post-2010 American Standard units print the month and year of manufacture directly on the rating plate label.

For older units or units where the date isn’t printed:

• American Standard and Trane serial numbers follow the same format; the 9th and 10th characters of the serial often encode the year (2 digits) on many units
• Call American Standard support at 1-800-232-7663 with the full serial and model number

Thermostat compatibility

American Standard Silver and Gold series use standard 24V wiring. Compatible with any thermostat: ecobee, Nest, Honeywell, etc.

American Standard AccuComfort series: variable-capacity equipment uses a communicating bus (same as Trane ComfortLink II). For full variable-capacity modulation, use the AccuLink communicating thermostat (or Trane XL850/XL824 — same product). Standard 24V thermostats work but force two-stage operation.
