Equipment age narrows down your refrigerant considerably — but by very different amounts depending on the era. Here is the honest version, including where the year genuinely does not tell you.

The year gives us a probability. The equipment label or manufacturer documentation gives us the answer. Never infer refrigerant from installation date alone when the nameplate is readable — and since EPA removed the R-410A installation deadline in May 2026, a system installed in 2025 or 2026 can still legitimately be R-410A.

The three dates that actually matter

January 1, 2010 — new residential air conditioners and heat pumps could no longer be manufactured pre-charged with R-22. This is why equipment built from 2010 onward is R-410A with near-certainty.

January 1, 2020 — production and import of R-22 in the United States ended entirely. Existing systems can still be serviced from reclaimed and pre-2020 stock, but no new supply enters the market.

January 1, 2025 — new residential AC and heat pump systems manufactured or imported must use a refrigerant with a GWP under 700 under EPA’s Technology Transitions rule. R-410A (GWP about 2,088) is above that limit; R-454B (466) and R-32 (675) are below it.

What changed in May 2026

The 2023 rule originally paired that manufacturing cutoff with an installation deadline of January 1, 2026 for equipment built before it. On May 26, 2026, EPA issued a reconsideration final rule — effective July 27, 2026 — that removed the installation deadline. R-410A equipment manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025 can continue to be installed until existing supplies are depleted.

For identifying your own refrigerant, that has one important effect: installation year is now a much weaker signal than manufacture year. A system installed in 2026 can legitimately be either new R-454B equipment or pre-2025 R-410A stock. Only the nameplate settles it.

The two eras where the year tells you least

2005 to 2009 is a genuine coin-flip. Both R-22 and R-410A were in active production for new residential equipment, and the split varies by manufacturer and product line. If your system is from this window, checking the nameplate is not optional.

Any system that has been retrofitted defeats the table entirely. An R-22 system converted to R-407C, R-438A, R-422B, or R-417A will have an original nameplate that no longer describes what is inside. Look for a service sticker.

Mini-splits run on a different clock

Several ductless manufacturers adopted R-32 from around 2018, years ahead of central split systems. A mini-split from 2020 is meaningfully more likely to be R-32 than a central system of the same year.

What refrigerant does a 2015 AC use?

R-410A, with very high confidence. New residential equipment could not be manufactured with R-22 after January 1, 2010, so anything built between 2010 and 2021 is R-410A unless it was later retrofitted.

What refrigerant does a 2007 AC use?

Either R-22 or R-410A — this is the genuine transition period, and the year alone will not tell you. Both were in active production for new residential equipment. Check the nameplate on the outdoor unit.

Can a system installed in 2026 still use R-410A?

Yes. EPA removed the installation deadline for pre-2025-manufactured R-410A equipment in a final rule issued May 26, 2026. Equipment built before January 1, 2025 can be installed until supplies run out.
