This exists to answer one practical question: when a technician says they added three pounds, is that a small correction or most of your system? Without a total, the number is meaningless.

Why there is no single answer

Total charge depends on the outdoor unit, the indoor coil it is matched to, and the length and diameter of the line set between them. Two 3-ton systems in the same neighbourhood can legitimately hold different amounts.

Manufacturers handle this by publishing a factory charge good for a specific line-set length, plus a per-foot adjustment beyond it. Goodman, for example, factory-charges its R-410A outdoor units for 15 feet and then adds an amount per additional foot that depends on line-set diameter:

That range is the whole point. A single “ounces per foot” number does not survive contact with one manufacturer’s own table, let alone six manufacturers. We publish per-brand factors only where we have verified them against the manufacturer’s own document, and we say so when we have not.

What counts as a lot

As a rough orientation, a typical residential system holds somewhere between 2 and 4 pounds per ton of cooling. For a common 3-ton system that is roughly 6 to 12 pounds. So:

  • Under half a pound on a 3-ton system is a small correction.
  • 1 to 2 pounds is a meaningful amount that should have an explanation.
  • 4 pounds or more is a large share of the system, and a recharge without a repair is unlikely to hold.

Turn the amount added into a percentage and a read on what it means.

Frequently asked questions

Is this how much refrigerant should be added to my system?

No, and that distinction matters. This estimates what the system holds in total when correctly charged. How much to add is determined by a technician measuring superheat or subcooling against the equipment’s own charging chart, and it requires EPA 608 certification.

Where do I find my system tonnage?

It is usually encoded in the model number on the outdoor unit. A number like 024 or 24 means 24,000 BTU, which is 2 tons; 036 is 3 tons; 048 is 4 tons. Twelve thousand BTU equals one ton.

Why does line-set length change the charge?

The line set is part of the sealed loop, so a longer run simply contains more refrigerant. That is why manufacturers publish a factory charge for a specific length plus a per-foot adjustment beyond it.
