Start with refrigerant type
What refrigerant does your system use? The system’s refrigerant type is on the rating plate on the outdoor unit. If you see R-22 (also marketed as “Freon” — technically the Chemours brand name, but widely used as a generic), the decision simplifies:

Replace any R-22 system that needs:

The 50% rule
If the repair cost is more than 50% of the installed cost of a new system, and the AC is more than 10 years old, replace.
Example: a 10-year-old AC needs a new contractor and capacitor. Total repair: $400. Replacement: $5,000. 50% of $5,000 = $2,500. Repair cost is well under 50% — repair it.
Same system, but the compressor failed: $2,000 repair on a 10-year-old system. 50% of $5,000 = $2,500. Repair is under 50%, but the compressor is the core component of the AC — a failed compressor on a 10-year-old system often signals other end-of-life factors. Get a second opinion before committing.

Replace immediately or strongly prefer replacement
R-22 system needing refrigerant: replace. See above.
Compressor failure on a 10+ year old R-410A system: the compressor is the most expensive single component and the heart of the refrigerant cycle. Replacement cost is $1,200–2,500 installed. At 10+ years, this is a borderline repair — evaluate:
- Is the system otherwise in good condition?
- Is the indoor coil also aged (a mismatched new compressor into an old coil may cause efficiency or reliability issues)?
- Is there a manufacturer or extended warranty on the compressor?
At 12–15 years with a failed compressor: replace the system.
Refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil (indoor coil): evaporator coil leak repair requires finding and sealing the leak, evacuating the system, and recharging — often $800–1,500+. A new coil is $1,000–2,000 installed. On a 10+ year old system, the coil is often part of the replacement decision. If you need a new evaporator coil on a 12+ year old system: replace the system with a matched outdoor and indoor coil.

Repair on most systems at any reasonable age
Run capacitor failure: $150–300 installed. Repair on any system under 15 years. This is the most common AC repair — capacitors fail routinely and their failure doesn’t indicate broader system decline.
Contactor failure: $150–300 installed. Repair.
Thermostat or wiring issue: $100–400. Not an AC problem per se — repair.
Condenser fan motor failure: $300–600 installed. Repair on any system under 12 years. The condenser fan is a simpler component than the compressor; its failure doesn’t accelerate compressor decline.
Refrigerant leak in a service valve or at fittings (not in the coil): $300–600 to find and repair the leak + recharge on R-410A systems. Repair if the system is under 12 years. Coil leaks are more complex (see above).

The efficiency argument
Replacing a 10-year-old AC (10 SEER, pre-2006 equipment) with a 15 SEER2 unit:
- 15 SEER2 ÷ 10 SEER ≈ 30–35% less electricity for the same cooling
- At $150/month in summer electric bills (roughly 3 cooling months), that’s ~$45–50/month savings or ~$135–150/summer
- Payback from efficiency alone: $5,000 ÷ $150/yr = 33 years
The efficiency argument alone almost never justifies early replacement. But when a 10-year-old 10-SEER system needs a $1,500 repair, the combined value of reliability improvement + efficiency gain can make replacement the better total-cost decision.

Repair vs. replace with IRA credits
Under the Inflation Reduction Act, qualifying heat pumps that replace central ACs receive up to $2,000 in federal tax credit. This changes the economics:
- $5,500 heat pump replacement – $2,000 IRA credit = $3,500 net
- Compare to $2,000 AC compressor repair that defers replacement 3 years
At $3,500 net for a new heat pump vs. $2,000 for a repair that delays replacement, the math favors the heat pump if you planned to replace within 3 years anyway.

The repair-stacking warning
If your AC has had multiple repairs in the past 2–3 seasons totaling $600+, and it’s 10+ years old, you’re likely in the early stages of an end-of-life failure pattern. The next repair probably won’t be the last.
Consider: $600 in repairs + $800 more next summer + eventual $2,000 compressor = $3,400 over 3 years, vs. $5,500 replacement now (especially if IRA credits apply).

FAQ
The tech said my AC needs a new compressor but I can get a “hard start kit” to extend its life. Is that a good idea? A hard-start kit (capacitor + potential relay or current relay) helps a weak compressor start under high-load conditions and can extend compressor life by 1–3 years. It’s a $150–300 investment. If you’re within 1–2 years of planned replacement anyway and the compressor is still functional (just weak), a hard-start kit can bridge the gap. It doesn’t fix a failed compressor — only postpones replacement.
My AC is 8 years old and I was told I need a new system. Is that right? An 8-year-old AC shouldn’t need replacement under most circumstances. Get a second opinion. The most common legitimate reasons for recommending replacement on an 8-year-old system: failed compressor under a warranty claim dispute, R-22 refrigerant (should have been replaced at purchase if R-22 was in use in 2014–2016, but older units existed), or an undersized system that was never right for the house. Compressor failures at 8 years on a properly maintained R-410A system are uncommon — verify the diagnosis.
Can I just add refrigerant instead of fixing the leak? EPA Section 608 requires that refrigerant leaks be repaired in systems over 50 lbs of refrigerant (commercial-threshold). For residential systems under 50 lbs, there’s no legal prohibition on charging a leaking system — but recharging without fixing the leak just defers the next recharge until the refrigerant leaks out again. It’s a treadmill, not a fix.
